O'Brien at odds with Douro Valley's price

TRAINER Danny O'Brien finds himself in a familiar situation going into tomorrow's Australian Cup with his galloper Douro Valley.

The under-rated galloper is again at double-figure odds ($11 with TAB Sportsbet) going into a big race and has barely featured in pre-race discussions.

O'Brien, however, says he has a better chance at Flemington than the odds suggest.

It was the same case last spring for Douro Valley, who in six runs did not start shorter than $10.

That campaign included a win against Maldivian in the Naturalism Stakes, a second in the Caulfield Cup and a close-up fourth in the Turnbull Stakes.

The theme has continued this campaign with Douro Valley starting at $51 when a close-up ninth in the Orr Stakes before his third at $21 in the St George Stakes.

Last spring O'Brien queried Douro Valley's starting price, compared to Maldivian's, going into the Caulfield Cup, pointing out his horse had beaten Maldivian in the Naturalism Stakes.

This time O'Brien is perplexed by the difference in prices between Princess Coup and Douro Valley.

Princess Coup is $2.50 favourite with TAB Sportsbet and Douro Valley is $11.

O'Brien said Princess Coup outsprinted his horse around the corner in the St George Stakes.

"Last campaign he finished second in the Caulfield Cup and she finished third, so we can be competitive against her," O'Brien said.

"Last spring he finished an unlucky fourth in the Turnbull Stakes and he also defeated Maldivian over 2000m at his third run back from a spell fair and square, which is what he is at on Saturday."

O'Brien said Douro Valley would be suited by the step up to 2000m.

"If he can get a good tempo, which on paper should be the case, he has to have an each-way chance."

"He's going as well as he can be going into tomorrow and I think he's a live chance."
