Danny O'Brien Profile

Few trainers anywhere in the world can have reached the top of their profession as quickly as Danny O’Brien.

Since beginning with just one horse 10 years ago, his stable has developed into one of the foremost training establishments in the industry, attracting owners such as Gerry Harvey, Nick Moraitis, Coolmore, Newhaven Park Stud, Waikato Stud’s Gary Chittick and the Martin Thoroughbred Racing Syndicate.

Danny’s fortunes attained new levels last year when his victories featured the SAJC Goodwood Handicap, Adelaide Cup, VRC Salinger Stakes and Emirates Stakes at the elite level as well as the VRC Ascot Vale Stakes-Gr.2, VRC The Age Classic-Gr.2, AJC Sapphire Stakes-Gr.3 and SAJC Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic.

A youthful 35 year-old, his success combined with his friendly disposition and impressive appearance - he stands an imposing 188cm - has even led to Emirates Airline signing him up.

“At about the time Emirates was putting its name to the Melbourne Cup one of the company’s representatives approached me about sponsorship,” Danny said.

“As a result of that we have sponsorship signage outside the stable and the staff wear Emirates caps, jackets and that sort of thing.”

That Danny has been able to achieve all this in such a short space of time is a tribute to his business acumen - he has degrees in economics and law - his eye for a horse, his confidence, his patient hands-on approach and his complete dedication.

“I love waking up every morning and being with my horses. Doing what I am doing never feels like work . . . and I know I am a very lucky man, because I enjoy my work so much.”

It was an attitude instilled into him at a very young age, when he began learning the trade alongside his father Peter, who had developed a passion for racehorses from his father James.

A publican and starting-price bookmaker, in his day James raced, among others, the classy performer Desert Breeze who won the prestigious VATC Toorak Handicap-Gr.1 at Caulfield in 1952 and 1953.
