O'Brien thrilled to land classy colt

Victorian trainer Danny O'Brien couldn't hide his delight when he landed Lot 258 at the Inglis Easter Sales on Wednesday, a stunning colt by Pierro from dual Group winning mare Nediym's Glow.
"I really liked this bloke from the moment I laid eyes on him and to get him for this price is pleasing," said the 16-time Group 1 winning trainer of his $190,000 purchase.
"Our philosophy is to look for value for our clients. Rather than pay the huge money we look for yearlings that fly under the radar, but have huge upside and this guys fits the bill. He has a strong (pedigree) page that is backed up by being an outstanding type."
O'Brien has had success in the past with this philosophy as he made stallions out of relatively cheap purchases Star Witness ($150,000), Shamexpress ($130,000) and Shamus Award ($220,000).
He also only paid $65,000 for dual Group 1 winning mare Shamrocker, who has produced $1 million yearlings in Japan since retiring to stud.
"The mare of this colt has produced a two-year-old black-type performer this season and this bloke has all the hallmarks of an early runner," O'Brien said.
O'Brien said the Pierro colt would be offered to his stable clients and if anyone was interested in racing the horse with him there were welcome to contact the stable.
