Queen's dominance brings up a first for O'Brien

Star Witness mare Runway Queen had to wait a while to secure her maiden victory, but the dominant performance bought up a first for her breeder-owner-trainer Danny O'Brien.

It was the Caulfield Cup winning trainer's first runner and first winner at the Avoca Cup meeting.

"It's great meeting for the local community and they certainly support it with attendance, which is great for the industry," O'Brien said.

"Runway Queen has done her job now, she is a winner and she is well bred so she will now move to the next phase of her career in the breeding barn," O'Brien said.

The trainer said he would not be tempted to continue her racing career despite her runaway four-length performance under rider Jason Bendow at start 12.

"She is not the easiest horse to train as she has quite an attitude and that equates to her no being quite good enough to win in town or gain black-type so she is more valuable to the partners in her, which is my wife and a good friend of ours, to head off to stud and hopefully she produce some good racing stock in the future."

Runway Queen debuted in February 2017 in a Seymour maiden, where she was well in the market and finished third to a filly called Shoals, who has gone to win multiple Group 1 races.
