Well-timed run secures Vella win

Vellastar broke through for his first win in more than 12 months for connections in just his second start for new trainer Danny O'Brien at Warrnambool on Thursday.

Jumping from the outside gate, jockey Damien Thornton had the six-year-old three-wide with cover just off midfield in the 1300m BM70 event.

As the field entered the straight Darren Weir's race favourite Indian Thunder cut the corner and appeared to open up what looked like the winning break on his rivals, however the Lope De Vega gelding wouldn't be denied and charged down the outside to win by the barest of margins.

The win was Vellastar's fifth from 17 career starts.

"He is a nice horse with some tricks, but everything panned out perfectly in the run and I was just hoping we got the bob in as this horse deserved the victory," Thornton said.

"He was great today and I think he will get some confidence out of the win and hopefully go on with it throughout his preparation," he added.
