Purrealist fights out with Marching

DANNY O'Brien bought Purrealist to win a Caulfield Guineas and, against all the usual racing logic, the horse could be three weeks from delivering.

"From the day we bought him the Caulfield Guineas has been the race we've aimed for," said O'Brien, who paid $700,000 for Purrealist at last year's Sydney Easter Yearling Sale.

"It doesn't always work out that way, of course, but this race and the Guineas are the two we had in mind right from the start."

After yesterday's Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) win, Betstar firmed Purrealist to $6 second Guineas favourite behind boom youngster Weekend Hussler, who bypassed yesterday's race.

The $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) will be run at Caulfield on October 13.

Yesterday Purrealist made amends for a series of minor placings with an emphatic effort.

Starting third favourite at $5.50, Purrealist settled about midfield and crept forward before gaining a crucial rails split about the 200m.

Ridden by top Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman, Purrealist had a half neck to spare on the line from another leading Guineas contender, Marching ($4 fav), who had a perfect trail behind the leaders.

O'Brien and Bowman were adamant the 1600m of the Guineas would be ideal for Purrealist.

"He's a real high quality horse," O'Brien said.

"He'll be right at his peak in a few weeks."

Bowman said: "He'll be a lot better over the mile."
