More weight for Master O'Reilly

MELBOURNE Cup favourite Master O'Reilly will carry 53 kilograms in the $5 million race after he was rehandicapped 1.5 kilograms yesterday for his win in the Caulfield Cup.

Racing Victoria Ltd's chief handicapper, Greg Carpenter, yesterday explained that the five-year-old the previous week had been given a 1.5-kilogram Melbourne Cup penalty for his victory in the group 2 Winning Edge Presentation Stakes, but that the Winning Edge was a penalty-free race for the Caulfield Cup.

"While the three-kilogram penalty is historically at the higher end of the scale, in his current vein of form, Master O'Reilly remains well-placed to become the 12th horse to complete the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double in the same year," Carpenter said.

Since 1991, four horses have won the double. Ethereal in 2001 carried a two-kilogram penalty, while Might And Power (1997) received 3.5 for his Caulfield Cup win. Doriemus (1995) carried an extra three kilograms and Let's Elope (1991) 2.5.
