Bumper year has O'Brien confident for season ahead

As the new season arrives Danny O'Brien is looking forward with confidence thanks to his best year as a trainer in 2007/08.

O'Brien had a bumper 12 months with three Group 1 victories amongst his 18 stakes winners and a third place finish in the Victorian Metropolitan title race.

His 48 metropolitan victories was his best tally to date at city tracks, which was highlighted by Master O'Reilly's and Douro Valley's Caulfield Cup quinella.

O'Brien won 106 races in total across the nation - the most for him in a season and the second-year running that he has registered a century of winners.

In addition to his Caulfield Cup glory, O'Brien also notched Group 1 wins in South Australia (Sangster Stakes with Juste Momente) and Queensland (Winter Stakes with Absolut Glam).

With more than $7million in winnings O'Brien claimed third on the national prizemoney premiership.

"It was a great season for our stable," O'Brien said.

"To get these results is a testament to the hard work of our staff and it's great to be able to repay the loyalty of our owners."

O'Brien has a big assault planned on the Cups this spring with Master O'Reilly, DouroValley, Gallopin joined by new stables acquisitions Alexander of Hales and Lords Ransom aimed at the staying features.

"Each year we aim to surpass our previous best results and this coming season will be no different."
