O'Brien chases Sydney classic

Trainer Danny O’Brien is chasing his first 3yo classic winner with consistent stayer Buffett in the AJC Derby on Saturday.Buffett will jump from barrier 3 in the 2400m $1.6million Randwick classic and will be ridden by Damien Oliver.

“He is such an honest horse, he keeps giving everything each race. His lead-up form has been quite sound and he is looking for the 2400m now,” O’Brien said.

The Danasinga gelding rose to prominence in the spring when he graduated from an impressive seventh-length Geelong maiden win to run second to Whobegotyou in the Group 2 AAMI Vase and then a gutsy fourth in the Group 1 Victoria Derby.

Buffett then went for a short break before returning for his autumn campaign. He ran a strong third first-up against older horses at Sandown before an unlucky second at Caulfield. Last Saturday he rounded out his Derby preparation with a closing fourth in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill.

“He has comeback in terrific in shape. He has been strong on the line in all his starts this campaign and we are looking forward taking on the best with him this Saturday,” O’Brien said.
