Cabeza lights up Valley with record run
Cabeza put in the run of his career by breaking Group 1 winner Rangirangdoo’s 1600m track record at Moonee Valley on New Year’s Eve when he took out the 1300Whitten.com.au Handicap.
In an amazing performance, Cabeza came from midfield to contest for the lead rounding the turn before exploding away in the straight to win by 4 lengths.
Jockey Jason Maskiell was very impressed with the performance.
“I rode him to win around 12 months ago, but he is a different horse since they gelded him and his turn of foot tonight was excellent,” Maskiell said after the race.
Friday night’s race was a 0-82 event and O’Brien is looking to run Cabeza through his classes before taking on better company.
“He is a lovely horse that we have always had an opinion of and if he can keep stepping up to the mark we will give him his chance in better class races.”
The Zabeel four-year-old has now won 3 of his 13 starts and earned more than $130,000 in prizemoney.
