Depot Beach 50th winner for Stratum
Golden Slipper winner and leading young sire Stratum passed a seasonal milestone at Geelong on Friday when his two year-old son Depot Beach became his 50th individual Australian winner of the 2010/2011 season.
The Danny O'Brien-trained first starter was easy in the market, but after settling midfield produced a strong run in the straight to surge home and score easily in the 1200 metre juvenile maiden by a length and a half at the juicy odds of $31.
Entered by Widden Stud for the 2010 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Depot Beach was later withdrawn and retained to race with Widden Stud's Antony Thompson sharing in the ownership.
"Danny (O'Brien) had no real expectation for Depot Beach today as he's been a bit of a slow learner, but he always thought that when the penny dropped, he'd be able to run and that certainly happened under race conditions,” said Antony Thompson.
Depot Beach is the second foal and first winner for Sedoso, an unraced Viscount mare, whose grand-dam is Group I AJC Australian Oaks winner My Brilliant Star.
A terrific Black Type family, it has also produced Group I winners Shot of Thunder, Sudurka and Lachlan River.
