Dream start for Waikato Stud lease package

Kiwi filly I'm Buxom provided Waikato Stud-Danny O'Brien Racing's Lease Package a dream start to the partnership with a win from the first runner for the partners.

Mid-way through last year Waikato Stud offered trainer Danny O'Brien the chance to hand select a number their regally bred fillies that were planning to race in Australia under a lease partnership.

O'Brien jumped at the opportunity selecting four three-year-old and four two-year-old fillies to lease to stable clients.

"We decided to lease them as a package so any owners that came into them raced all eight fillies, and it's exciting for the first runner for partnership was able to win, and win so impressively," O'Brien said.

Jockey James Winks took the daughter of O'Reilly straight to the front from a wide draw in the 1300m event, before kicking clear and proving too strong for her rivals.

"I was very impressed as she still has a lot to learn, but she did everything right and was a cut above this lot," Winks said.

This lease package consists of progeny from Waikato stallions O'Reilly, Savabeel, Pins and Ocean Park, and the Stud race the horses with the leasees.

"It was such a great opportunity as all these fillies are from great families that the Stud is either retaining to breed or weren't sold at the yearling sales for whatever reason. If you purchased any these horses through a sale ring you would be looking at a substantial outlay," O'Brien said.

"This is a great start to the partnership and it's something we will look develop into a yearly opportunity for our stable clients."
