Engine revs up with Banjo Patterson Series Final win

De Little Engine capped an outstanding four-year-old season as the promising stayer proved too strong winning the Banjo Patterson Series Final at Flemington on Saturday.

The Encosta De Lago gelding has amassed more than $200,000 from 12 starts for the 2014/15 season, which has included four wins, four placings and three fourths, with his worst performance a sixth placing on unsuitable ground early in the year.

Trainer Danny O'Brien was thrilled for the horse to take out the feature win given his luckless past two starts.

"He is such an honest horse. There is not much of him, but he is all heart and he never runs a bad race," O'Brien said.

"He has drawn double figure barriers at his past three starts and ended up too far back to be a winning chance in those two races. Luckily today Damien took the initiative and, although he was closer than we were expecting, it was a great ride as he rated him perfectly just behind the leader."

O'Brien said he would give the son of Oaks winner Arapaho Miss a freshen up and look to aim him at a feature race towards the end of the Spring.
