Family ties strong for Meaisin

Meaisin joined his black-type winning half-brothers Vigor, Vincent Mangano and Joey Massino as a metropolitan winner when he took out the Rokk Ebony Handicap over 1800m at Sandown this afternoon.

The well-fancied son of Zabeel made it two wins from his past two starts when he proved too strong for his rivals in the three-year-old restricted 0-72 event.

Trainer Danny O’Brien watched the win from the Magic Millions Sales on the Gold Coast and was very pleased with Meaisin’s performance.

“He’s been a slow learner and he still does a lot wrong, but has started to understand and put it together at his past couple of starts,” O’Brien said.

Jockey Glen Boss said the three-year-old gelding had further scope to improve on today’s win.

“At the 300m I thought we were going to win going away, but as soon as he hit the front he stopped and waited for them to come at him. He was never going to lose and once he learns to put a race away he can progress to better races,” Boss said.

O’Brien said he would give Meaisin 3-4 weeks between runs and resist the temptation to step him in class too quickly

“He’s by Zabeel so we have plenty of time as we know they improve with age so we will keep educating him and running him through his classes and we are expecting him to develop into a lovely horse.”
