FINAL SURGE GETS LONFIRE HOME

Jockey Jason Maskiell's late race guile saw Lonfire record his second career win on Saturday at Avoca.

The talented hoop switched the whip into his left hand, and this action led to the son of Lonhro surging to the line to score the win in the 1860m event.

"It was a good win as we got further back than I had planned, but he made a long searching run and he really wanted to find the line which is why he was able to land the win," Maskiell said post race.

The win was trainer Danny O'Brien's 78th for the season,  and had ended a frustrating day for the trainer-jockey combination as they had two runner-up finishes earlier in the program.
