IMPORT SHOWS GRIT FOR WIN

French-bred gelding El Campeon broke through for his maiden victory with a determined showing at Kyneton on Thursday.

Danny O'Brien Racing General Manager Matt Harrington was full of praise for the trainer's staff who had the horse in shape to win first-up over 1875m.

"It's a great effort by our staff across our three stables to have him to perform so well fresh," Harrington said.

"The horse has his quirks so it was a very good ride by Fred as he had to be at him a long way out, but full credit to the horse as well as he sustained a long run to get the win."
