LAELAPS CATCHES HER PREY

It might have been by the barest of margins, but Laelaps laid claim to her maiden win with a dogged performance at Kyneton on Thursday.

The daughter of Tavistock, who is out Group 1 winning mare Allez Wonder, had put together two nice placings to start her second preparation before landing her first win in the 1850m event.

Ridden by Damien Thornton, the three-year-old staying prospect settled three-wide with cover back in the field before coming with her run down the centre of the track.  But it wasn't all smooth sailing as she was made to work for the win by Diamond Dagger, who wouldn't go down without a fight.

"We were following the right horse in the run and she took us a long way into it, but we were able to peel off her back and fight for a good tough win," Thornton said post race.

Laelaps now has a win and two placings from six starts to start her career.
