Lopov romps in at Morphettville

Astute placement by leading trainer Danny O'Brien saw emerging stayer Lopov bounce back onto the winner's list with emphatic six-length victory at Morphettville on Saturday.

The gelding proved too strong in the first race on the Adelaide card cantering home for an easy win in the 2500m event.

"It was a soft win," O'Brien said. "He is a nice staying style of horse and it was great to see him bounce back to form on Saturday."

O'Brien has hoped to sneak the horse into the Caulfield Cup last Saturday through the Herbert Power, but the four-year-old son of Savabeel was outclassed.

"We were hoping to sneak him in, but we found out that he is below that top class. He is a tough horse that backs up well so we thought why not send him across to Adelaide as it looked a winnable race," O'Brien added.

Jumping from the inside gate, leading Adelaide jockey Matthew Neilson, who won four races on the day, took Lopov straight to the front and the pair were able to dictate the race before extending away for a clear victory in the closing stages.

O'Brien has a super record in SA this season having won four races from just seven races.

Lopov may now head to the Bendigo Cup over 2400m for his next start as O'Brien looks to continue the stayer's development.
