MARACANA SCORES ON CLASSY DEBUT

Three-year-old New Zealand-bred filly Maracana showed signs of a big future in her debut victory at Kyneton on Tuesday.

The daughter of Shamexpress, who is named after the famous Rio De Janeiro football stadium that has hosted two World Cup Finals, burst through to deny Japanese mare and odds-on favourite Rutherford despite being quite green in the run.

Connections are considerably excited with her future as trainer Danny O'Brien expects her to improve out of her debut performance.

"Today's result was done on raw ability as she still has so much to learn, but we have always liked her and this was hopefully the tip of the iceberg for her," O'Brien said, who bred and races the filly with close connections.

"She showed an excellent turn of foot inside the final furlong which should hold her in good stead for her future racing."
