O'Brien brings up NZ-bred double

Danny O'Brien's affinity with New Zealand-bred stock was on display at Seymour On Tuesday as the gun trainer bought up a race to race double.

Winkelmann, a three-year-old daughter of Rip Van Winkle, scored an easy maiden victory over a mile, the race after Sacred Sham proved too strong over 1000m both ridden by white-hot hoop Damian Lane.

"It's great to get a win for Trelawney Stud's Brent and Cherry Taylor," O'Brien's Racing Manager Matt Harrington said, of Winkelmann's win at the odds of $1.50.

"Over those shorter trips in town she was getting too far back. Today she was able to settle up on speed and lead and she was too good. She has good scope for the future."

Out of of black type winner Crepe De Chine, who was also trained by O'Brien, the filly appears to have thrown more to her sire Rip Van Winkle.

"Her mother did run a close up fifth in an Oakleigh Plate at Group 1 level, so it appears she is more Rip Van Winkle as we do think she can get over further in the future," Harrington said.
