O'Brien has one concern ahead of Pakenham Cup

Trainer Danny O’Brien has just one concern about De Little Engine ahead of Saturday’s Pakenham Cup (2500m).

The seven-year-old is the highest-rated entry in the $250,000 Listed event however, pays for that with topweight of 60kg.

“He’s certainly ready to run a big race but the weight scale is against him,” O’Brien said.

“The 2500m is ideal for him now third-up but the 60kg is the only negative.”

De Little Engine made up several lengths last time out in the Listed Ballarat Cup, coming from second last around the home turn to finish fourth behind Grand Dreamer, beaten 2 1/4-lengths under 56kg.

“He was probably the best closer in the Ballarat Cup and was hitting the line super,” O’Brien said.

“That was only 2200m and now he gets to 2500m which is right in his sweet spot.

“He’s a very good stayer and his form has been first-class now for several seasons once he gets to a mile and a half.”

Daniel Moor rode De Little Engine to victory in the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes over 3200m in May and will again be in the saddle on Saturday.

“Daniel gets along with the horse really well and is riding well,” O’Brien said.

“(De Little) Engine spends a lot of time at Barwon Heads and is in good form there now so we’re anticipating a good run on Saturday.”
