Purr-fect start for Purrealist progeny

The hype surrounding Makybe stallion Purrealist continued earlier this week when the Danny O'Brien-trained Purrplexed became the first Victorian 2yo trial winner for the season following a strong 800m trial at Cranbourne on Monday.

It's a case of deja vu for O’Brien who selected and trained Purrealist and has been an avid supporter of the stallion since retiring to stud. O’Brien is one of many leading trainers to secure a Purrealist yearling for their stable. Purrplexed is pictured here during trackwork at Flemington.

Averaging nearly 10 times his service fee at the major yearling sales earlier this year, Purrealist progeny have been the talk amongst the experts.

Gai Waterhouse, Peter Moody, Lee Freedman, John Hawkes, Rick Hore-Lacy and Gillian Heinrich are among some of the leading trainers with upcoming Purrealist 2yos in their respective stables.

Makybe owner and Purrealist shareholder Tony Santic has sent a number of his top mares to the stallion in recent years including Gold Anthem, the dam of the Makybe bred sensation Starspangledbanner.

"We are really excited about how well his progeny have been received and the feedback so far has been fantastic and to see his first 2yo come out and win a trial is really exciting. I'm glad Des and I retained a couple to race ourselves," Santic said.

"We've committed another 15 or so of our mares to him again this season. He throws such lovely types and the returns have been great at the sales. We can only hope they continue to do their job on race day now and it's looking pretty good."

Purrealist stands his fourth season at Makybe this year for a fee of $8,000 plus GST.
