QUICK BACK UP SEES KALUAKOI STREAK HOME

An eight-day back up and step out in trip played into the hands of Kaluakoi as the three-year-old colt surged to victory on Cranbourne Cup Day on Saturday.

The son of Zoustar lapped up the 2000m as jockey Blake Shinn was able to dictate terms out in front.

"Once I was able to find the top and have a controlled gallop in my favour, we always felt the winner," Shinn said post-race.

"I was confident as the horse is trained by Danny O'Brien and we know he's one of the best staying trainers around. And a lot of these horses are untried at the trip, probably everyone of them, so I had confidence that he had the fitness in his legs to lead and tackle a strong headwind down the back.

"Although we had a soft time, he still had to do it. He did a good job."

Danny O'Brien Racing Foreman Lachlan Currie had a grin from ear to ear post race and was thrilled with the result.

"We've taken some time to get to know the horse and I think we're really starting to get him right now," Currie said.

"We've got to thank Mark Sowerby for sending us the horse, he's a great supporter of the stable so it's always great to get a good winner for him."

"He likes to bowl along at his own tempo like he did today. Blake rated him beautifully in front, just dictated things so that's kind of his racing pattern and that seems to really work for him."
