Sepoy filly spins her way to victory

A drop back in class proved the catalyst for three-year-old Watchmespin to score her maiden victory at Seymour on Saturday.

Punters at Seymour should have taken a lead from the fact Cox Plate winning trainer Danny O'Brien was comfortable to debut Watchmespin at Flemington over 1000m against the likes of Crown Witness and Madeenaty on August 5 before yesterday's maiden event.

The Sepoy filly, a $7 chance, proved too strong of her rivals in the 1300m trip on Saturday.

Jockey James Winks settled the filly just worse than midfield in the three-wide line from a wide gate. Winks then angled her into the clear upon straightening and despite racing greenly, the three-year-old surged to a soft win.

"We have always had a big opinion of her, but she just found the 1000m too short at Flemington. However today she was very good as she has a lot of improvement left in her and we expect her best to be over longer distances than this race," O'Brien said.
