Strong debut from Savatone

Trainer Danny O'Brien has enjoyed great success with Waikato Stud-sired progeny throughout his career and he appears to have unearthed another nice colt at Echuca yesterday.

Savatone, on debut with James Winks in the saddle, proved too strong for his rivals in the 1100m maiden event coming from well back in the field to record a strong win.

O'Brien was thrilled with the Savabeel colt's performance, who was picked up from Mapperley Stud's draft at the 2014 Karaka Yearling Sales.

"We have always had a good opinion of the horse, but until they go and produce on race day you are never really sure." O'Brien said.

"We expect him to take good improvement from the day out and based on that win he looks a progressive type."

The colt is nominated for the BECK Caulfield Guineas and O'Brien has earmarked a 1200m three-year-old at Sandown on Wednesday fortnight for his second race start.
