The New Boy finds winning formula
A return to his hometrack and the services of leading apprentice Katelyn Mallyon unlocked the winning formula for three-year-old The New Boy at Flemington on Saturday.
The Rock of Gibraltar gelding gained the upperhand inside the final 200m on the well backed Little Bro after Mallyon had settled him outside the leader in the 1600m event.
"She rides better than the boys," O'Brien said highlighting Mallyon terrific record for his stable, who was later seriously injured in Race 7 on the program when her mount clipped heels and fell.
The win was the first of a consistent campaign for The New Boy that had seen placings in the Bendigo and Adelaide Guineas.
"He's a good solid horse. At the moment he lacks the killer punch to win a big race, but hopefully he'll develop that as a four and five-year-old," O'Brien said.
