Unbeaten Summer brings the heat

Flemington filly Summer Sham ($7) continued the unbeaten start to her racing career with a brilliant victory in Saturday’s Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

From the inside barrier, the daughter of Not A Single Doubt began two lengths quicker than any of her rivals and was never headed from that point on, fighting bravely over the final 100m to hold out closers Palazzo Vecchio ($10) and Miss Wahoo ($7).

Trainer Danny O’Brien said he was thrilled with the way the filly had coped with the steep rise in class between each of her three career runs and confirmed her next run would likely be in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) on her home track.

“She’s a lightly-raced filly that’s racing in really good form and this looked a nice race for her today,” O’Brien said.

“We finally drew a good barrier and she was brilliant from the gate, which really gave nothing else a chance form there.

“The Kewney is on in a fortnight, that’s a Group 2 1400m race on her home track, so we’re certainly going to look at that and then obviously we’ve got Sydney if she’s still holding together.”

The win continued a purple patch of form for jockey Daniel Moor - he boasts a 20 percent winning strike rate from his last 50 rides – and he was quick to thank the loyalty of Sumer Sham’s connections, including breeder and part-owner Jeff Dimery.

“She’s just getting faster with each start,” Moor said.

“As soon as they came to her, she kicked and found another gear so she’s a smart filly.

“Jeff Dimery is a great supporter of mine and I’m tipping he would’ve had plenty of phone calls (from other jockeys) but he’s kept me on and those things keep you turning up to the races every day.”
