Young hoop joins O'Brien on loan

Boris Thornton has finished the summer on a roll and the in-form apprentice will be hoping his hot run continues as he begins a stint on loan with Group 1 winning trainer Danny O'Brien.

The Geelong youngster finished the summer on a high on Tuesday, earning maximum points in the Wilson Medic One Rising Stars race at Bendigo.

Nine days earlier, Thornton broke through with a winner at Group-level at just his second attempt, when riding rank outsider Kiss Me Ketut to victory in the G3 Vamos Stakes (1400m) at Launceston.

And the 19-year-old's next winner wasn't as momentous, but it was dominant - as he rode the Shaun Dwyer-trained Excitement ($10) to victory by four-and-a-quarter lengths in the 1600m Benchmark 64 on Tuesday.

Thornton is looking forward to his chance with O'Brien.

"He has some really nice horses and hopefully this stint will help bring me to the attention of more metro trainer's as I still claim 3kgs in town," Thornton said.

O'Brien said he was thrilled to engage the services of the apprentice.

"He has a great racing pedigree and he is a talented rider as we have all seen over the past week. Also the fact he is a Geelong local ties in nicely with our 13th Beach and Flemington facilities," O'Brien said.

Thornton will have his first ride for his new boss on Sunday at Colac aboard Silentz, who was narrowly defeated on debut at Moe recently.
