Valedictum gives O’Brien first international winner

Grand campaigner Valedictum gave Flemington trainer Danny O'Brien his first international winner with victory at Nad Al Sheba in Dubai overnight.

The eight-year-old secured a rails run for star jockey Ted Durcan before overpowering leader Echoes Rock in the final 50m to win the Mustaqbali Handicap over 1500m on Turf.

The Umatilla gelding, who started at 10-1 in betting, picked up $US72,000 for his connections from the victory.

"It was terrific effort from the old boy, especially carrying 58.5kgs and Ted Durcan's ride was great," an ecstatic O'Brien said.
