100-1 Crow has bookies counting

Kiwi mare Counting Crows warmed herself to bookmakers around the country when she scored as a 100-1 shot at Pakenham on Tuesday.

After an inglorious 19-length last second-up effort for new trainer Danny O'Brien, the Windsor Park Stud owned mare covered herself in glory with a fighting win over the 1600m journey.

"It's clear she just didn't handle, or put in, on the wet track at Geelong last start," O'Brien said.

"Getting her on the synthetic surface certainly has done the trick and this was more in line with her encouraging effort first-up for us.

"Ben (Thompson) actually eased her down as he thought there was something wrong with her last start. But she trotted out sound the next day and her work since had been good, so we put it down to the track conditions."

O'Brien also said he put the four-year-old mare over the hurdles in an effort to turn her form around.

"Sometimes it works, and I am just thankful she was able to get back on track today, and a lot of credit has to go to Ben as it was a fantastic ride."

The win was the mare's second from eight starts and O'Brien said he was looking forward to getting her out over a trip at her next couple of starts.
