HURRY GIVES THEM CURRY IN ANSETT CLASSIC

Hurry Curry went around one horse only to win the Listed Ansett Classic (2400m) at Mornington on Saturday courtesy of a perfectly rated ride from jockey Lachlan Neindorf to score a much deserved black-type victory..

Hurry Curry has run third in the VRC Oaks as a three-year-old and in the Autumn this year she placed in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup, which made this win sweet for owner-breeder Waikato Stud.

Neindorf made the absolute most of barrier one aboard Danny O’Brien-trained Hurry Curry to stalk leader and second favourite Sunset Park. 

Sunset Park, trained by Michael Kent, rolled along to suit herself under jockey Ethan Brown and looked a winner until Hurry Curry slid off heels around the home turn.

“There wasn’t much speed on paper … and she bounced well from the barriers and we were able to hold that box seat,” Neindorf said.

“I had to get her out of her comfort zone a couple of times but it was the right horse (Sunset Park) to get behind.

“I was happy to sacrifice niggling her a little bit throughout to hold the spot and she travelled nice and switched over heels.

“She just got the better of the (second) favourite there with the economical run.”

O’Brien’s racing manager Jack Howard praised the Neindorf ride on Hurry Curry.

“It was a really good ride from Lachie,” Howard said.

“When they went past the post the first time … (Beach Pad) rolled out and he kicked up underneath, which gave us that spot behind the leader.

“That was probably the pivotal move in the end.”

Beach Pad and favourite Leonchroi rounded out the top four.

The even tempo conspired against Leonchroi, with jockey Jamie Melham forced to shoulder off the rail in the straight and mount a luckless challenge.

Howard, an AFL-listed field umpire, said Group 2-placed Hurry Curry could head to the 2800m Benchmark 96 at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

“It’s great to get the black-type win, job done there,” Howard said.

“We’ll now assess what comes up … a 2800m on Cup Day, which she may head to.”
