INGLIS SPRINT WIN STRAIGHT OUT OF BART'S PLAYBOOK
Trainer Danny O’Brien admitted to channelling his former boss Bart Cummings when targeting the $1m Inglis Sprint with talented filly Getta Good Feeling (So You Think), which won today’s feature.
The 3YO was resuming over 1200m down the Flemington straight today, having last raced in the G1 VRC Oaks over 2500m in November.
While most Oaks runners tend to resume over a longer distance or take a couple of runs to reach their peak in their autumn 3YO campaign, Getta Good Feeling returned in explosive fashion, scoring a dominant Sprint win.
The Phoenix Broodmare Farm-bred Getta Good Feeling (pictured) defeated Nashville Jack and Fundamental Nature.
Getta Good Feeling is raced by Pinecliff Racing’s Jonathan Munz, whose bloodstock agent Dean Hawthorne signed for the filly at $525,000 from Milburn Creek at the Easter Yearling Sale.
O’Brien wasn’t at Flemington today but was always confident his filly could surprise fresh.
“My first boss was Bart [Cummings] and he used to do it all the time, coming back from the spring he’d often win with them first up down the straight so I guess it’s fair to say I had premonitions of him when I saw this race and it fitted in really well for us,’’ O’Brien said.
“We decided after the spring we wouldn’t try to get her to Sydney for the Oaks, that maybe she taps out at 2000m so I was able to give her a longer spell and the Inglis race set up perfectly for her and why wouldn’t we target it when it’s worth $1m.
“There was a lot to like about the race and from six weeks ago when we decided to target it, we were definitely trying to go there and win it because it’s great money and I had a reasonable amount of confidence that she’d do exactly what she did.’’
O’Brien has been at Oaklands this week inspecting yearlings ahead of the Premier Yearling Sale, which begins at 10am tomorrow.
“I’ll be there tomorrow, there’s plenty of nice horses to be looking at,’’ O’Brien continued.
“It’s our home sale and one we’ve been well rewarded from over the years so I’m looking forward to buying again.’’
