PUNTERS REJOICE FAV COMBO

Favourite backers rejoiced the Danny O’Brien-Ben Melham combination for the second time in a three days thanks to an aggressive ride aboard Need New Friends at Geelong on Friday.

The gun hoop shot the hot favourite straight to the lead and made every post a winner in the 1300m BM64 event.

The three-year-old filly’s win followed up Melham’s effortless win abroad Danny O’Brien’s odds-on pop Grinzinger Allee at Cranbourne on Wednesday.

“It was a very confident ride from Ben, and he made use of her terrific start and that ended up setting up the race for her,” trainer Danny O’Brien said post race.

“She deserves this win as she has been in terrific form this preparation.

“I am leaning towards tipping her out for a short break and getting her ready for a late Spring-Summer campaign as that looks like the best time for her.”

The victory was the daughter of Shamus Award’s second from nine career starts, and O’Brien was tipping her best was yet to come.

“One thing about Shamus Award’s stock is that they get better with age and I expect that it will be no different with this filly.”
