RACING GODS TURN GLOOM INTO SUNSHINE
Last Sunday Sun Gift was saddled up and about to enter the mounting yard as a $1.40 favourite before the meeting was called off due to the testing and wild weather. This led to a frustrating drive home from Sale for trainer Danny O'Brien's staff after missing out on the $35k event.
However the Racing Gods work in funny ways, as the Waikato Stud bred and owned mare unleashed a barnstorming finish to claim a last gasp win in the $130,000 BM70 2025m event at Cranbourne on Saturday.
"We were flat as a tack missing last week's race, but if not for that happening she wouldn't have been here so it has worked out so much better to win a much bigger prizemoney and important city race for Waikato Stud," Racing Manager Jack Howard said post race.
It wasn't all smooth sailing as the five-year-old mare was three-back the fence in running for jockey Craig Williams with nowhere to go. It wasn't until the 200m that she gained clear running and gave her a chance to reel in race favourite Suntora.
"I was impressed with her turn of foot late as she really launched and we are confident she will be have a strong preparation as she steps out further in distance," Howard said.
The win bought up a city double for the stable in the Moonee Valley Racing Club meeting at Cranbourne.
